Booking & Appointments

Booking an appointment at Ink & Soul is easy:

  1. Online Booking: Use our online booking system on our website to select your preferred date, time, and artist.
  2. Consultation First: For custom designs or larger pieces, we recommend scheduling a consultation first.
  3. Phone/Email: You can also call us at (718) 555-INKY or email hello@inkandsoul.com.
  4. In-Person: Visit our studio during business hours to book in person.

All appointments require a deposit to secure your booking. The deposit amount depends on the estimated length and complexity of your tattoo.

Tip: For custom work, have reference images and a clear idea of what you want ready before booking.

We have a strict cancellation policy to respect our artists' time:

  • More than 72 hours notice: Your deposit can be transferred to a new appointment date.
  • 48-72 hours notice: 50% of your deposit will be forfeited.
  • Less than 48 hours notice: Your entire deposit will be forfeited.
  • No-show: Your entire deposit is forfeited, and a new deposit will be required for future bookings.

To cancel or reschedule, please contact us as soon as possible by phone or email. We understand emergencies happen and will work with you when possible.

Consultations are required for:

  • Custom designs (not from our flash)
  • Large pieces (half sleeve, full sleeve, back pieces, etc.)
  • Cover-ups or reworks
  • Complex designs with multiple elements

Consultations are not required for:

  • Small, simple tattoos
  • Flash designs from our collection
  • Walk-in appointments (when available)

Consultation fees are $50 and are applied toward your tattoo if you book with us. During consultations, we discuss design, placement, size, pricing, and timeline.

Yes, we accept walk-ins based on artist availability. However, we strongly recommend booking in advance to guarantee a spot.

Walk-in availability depends on:

  • Artist schedules (some artists are appointment-only)
  • Size and complexity of the tattoo
  • Time of day and day of the week

For walk-ins, we recommend:

  1. Calling ahead to check availability
  2. Having a clear idea of what you want
  3. Being flexible with design choices
  4. Bringing valid ID and payment method

Walk-ins are typically limited to smaller, simpler designs that can be completed in 2 hours or less.

Pricing & Payments

Tattoo pricing varies based on several factors:

  • Artist Rate: Each artist sets their own hourly rate based on experience and expertise ($150-$300/hour)
  • Size & Complexity: Larger, more detailed designs cost more
  • Placement: Some areas are more difficult to tattoo
  • Color vs. Black & Gray: Color tattoos often take longer
  • Custom vs. Flash: Custom designs require more design time

General Price Ranges:

  • Small tattoos: $100-$300
  • Medium tattoos: $300-$800
  • Large tattoos: $800-$2,000+
  • Full-day sessions: $1,200-$1,800

The best way to get an accurate price is to book a consultation with your chosen artist.

  • Credit/Debit Cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover
  • Cash: Preferred method (cash discounts may be available)
  • Apple Pay & Google Pay: Available for in-person payments
  • Venmo & PayPal: For deposits only

Important Payment Information:

  • Deposits are required to book all appointments
  • Deposits are applied to the final cost of your tattoo
  • Final payment is due at the end of each session
  • We do not offer payment plans or financing
  • A 3.5% processing fee applies to all credit card transactions

  • If you reschedule with more than 72 hours notice, your deposit transfers to the new appointment
  • If you cancel with less than 72 hours notice, your deposit is forfeited according to our cancellation policy
  • If the artist cancels, your deposit is fully refunded or transferred

Deposit amounts vary based on the estimated length of your tattoo:

  • Small tattoos (under 2 hours): $100 deposit

Yes, we offer touch-ups for tattoos done at our studio:

  • One complimentary touch-up is included within 6 months of your original appointment
  • Touch-ups after 6 months may incur a small fee ($50-$100)
  • Touch-ups are not included if the tattoo was not properly cared for during healing
  • Difficult-to-heal areas (fingers, palms, feet, etc.) may require additional paid touch-ups

To schedule a touch-up:

  1. Contact us with photos of your healed tattoo
  2. Explain what areas need touching up
  3. Schedule an appointment (touch-ups are usually quick, 30-60 minutes)

Touch-ups are typically needed for areas that may have lost ink during healing or for colors that need reinforcing.

Design & Artwork

Yes, you can bring your own design! We encourage clients to bring reference images and ideas. However, there are some important considerations:

  • Original artwork: If you created the design yourself, we can tattoo it as-is
  • Other artists' work: We will not copy another tattoo artist's original work without permission
  • Copyrighted material: We cannot tattoo copyrighted logos, characters, or artwork without permission
  • Adaptation: Our artists may need to adapt your design to work well as a tattoo

What to bring:

  • Clear reference images (printed or digital)
  • Multiple angles if it's a 3D object
  • Notes about colors, size, and placement
  • Examples of tattoo styles you like

Our artists will work with you to create the best possible version of your design for your skin.

Our policy is to show you the final design at your appointment. Here's why:

  • Artist Time: Design work happens between appointments, and sending multiple revisions takes significant time
  • Collaboration: We prefer to make adjustments together in person where we can discuss placement and sizing
  • Final Touches: Designs often need last-minute adjustments based on body contours and placement

What to expect:

  1. Your artist creates the design before your appointment
  2. You see it for the first time when you arrive
  3. You can request changes (minor adjustments are free, major changes may require rescheduling)
  4. Once approved, we stencil it on and begin tattooing

If you're nervous about not seeing the design beforehand, we can schedule a separate design consultation for an additional fee.

Our artists specialize in various styles. Check each artist's portfolio to see their specialties:

  • Traditional/American Traditional: Bold lines, limited color palette, classic designs
  • Realism/Photorealism: Highly detailed, lifelike tattoos
  • Japanese (Irezumi): Traditional Japanese motifs, flowing compositions
  • Blackwork: Bold black ink designs, geometric patterns
  • Fine Line: Delicate, thin lines, minimalist designs
  • Watercolor: Painterly, fluid designs without black outlines
  • Neo-Traditional: Traditional style with more detail and color
  • Lettering/Calligraphy: Script, typography, ornamental lettering

Most artists have 1-2 primary styles they excel at. During your consultation, we'll match you with the artist whose style best fits your vision.

Tip: Look at each artist's portfolio on our website or Instagram to see examples of their work before booking.

Yes, we specialize in cover-ups! However, they require special consideration:

  • Consultation Required: All cover-ups require a consultation first
  • Design Limitations: Cover-up designs must be larger and darker than the original tattoo
  • Laser Consideration: Some cover-ups work better after 1-2 laser removal sessions to lighten the original tattoo
  • Realistic Expectations: Not all tattoos can be completely covered; some may need to be incorporated into the new design

Cover-up Process:

  1. Consultation to assess the existing tattoo
  2. Discussion of design options and limitations
  3. Possible recommendation for laser removal first
  4. Design creation specifically for covering the old tattoo
  5. Tattooing session(s)

Cover-ups typically cost more than a new tattoo of the same size due to the added complexity.

Tattoo Process

Tattoo duration varies widely based on several factors:

  • Size & Complexity: A small, simple tattoo might take 30 minutes, while a full sleeve can take 20+ hours over multiple sessions
  • Artist Speed: Each artist works at their own pace
  • Client Tolerance: Breaks may be needed for longer sessions
  • Color vs. Black & Gray: Color tattoos often take longer

General Time Estimates:

  • Small tattoos: 30 minutes - 2 hours
  • Medium tattoos: 2 - 4 hours
  • Large tattoos: 4 - 8 hours (often split into multiple sessions)
  • Full sleeves/back pieces: 15 - 30+ hours (multiple sessions)

During your consultation, your artist will give you a time estimate for your specific design.

Pain levels vary significantly from person to person and depend on several factors:

  • Placement: Bony areas (ribs, collarbone, ankles) are generally more painful than fleshy areas (upper arm, thigh, calf)
  • Individual Pain Tolerance: Everyone experiences pain differently
  • Tattoo Duration: Longer sessions can become more painful as the area gets irritated
  • Artist Technique: Some artists have a heavier or lighter hand

Pain Scale by Area (1-10, 10 being most painful):

  • Least Painful (1-3): Outer arm, thigh, calf, shoulder
  • Moderate (4-6): Forearm, chest, upper back, lower leg
  • Painful (7-8): Inner arm, ribs, stomach, feet
  • Most Painful (9-10): Hands, fingers, neck, head, elbows/knees

Pain Management Tips:

  • Get a good night's sleep before your appointment
  • Eat a substantial meal 1-2 hours before
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol and blood thinners 24 hours before
  • Bring headphones, a book, or something to distract you
  • Take breaks when needed

Remember: The pain is temporary, but your tattoo is permanent!

Proper preparation helps ensure a better tattoo experience and healing:

  • 24 Hours Before:
    • Get a good night's sleep
    • Hydrate well
    • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs
    • Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) unless prescribed
  • Day Of:
    • Eat a substantial meal 1-2 hours before
    • Shower and clean the area to be tattooed
    • Wear comfortable, appropriate clothing (consider tattoo placement)
    • Bring snacks and water for longer sessions
    • Bring entertainment (headphones, book, etc.)
    • Bring valid government-issued ID
    • Bring payment method (cash is preferred)
  • What NOT to do:
    • Don't sunburn the area to be tattooed
    • Don't apply lotions, creams, or oils to the area
    • Don't shave the area (we'll do that for you)
    • Don't come intoxicated or hungover

Tip: For longer sessions, bring a sugary snack and electrolytes to maintain energy levels.

Yes, you can bring one friend to your appointment, but with some guidelines:

  • One guest only due to space limitations in our studio
  • Your guest must be respectful and quiet during the tattooing process
  • Guests cannot interfere with the artist's work or give design input
  • Children are not allowed in the tattooing area (studio policy)
  • Guests may be asked to wait in our reception area if they're disruptive

Considerations for bringing a guest:

  • Some people find moral support helpful for their first tattoo or during longer sessions
  • Other clients prefer to focus without distractions
  • Discuss with your artist beforehand if you plan to bring someone

If you're getting a large piece done over multiple sessions, you might want different guests for different days, or come alone sometimes.

Aftercare & Healing

Proper aftercare is crucial for your tattoo to heal well. We provide detailed written instructions, but here's an overview:

First 24 Hours:

  1. Leave the bandage on for 2-4 hours (or as instructed by your artist)
  2. Wash hands before removing bandage
  3. Gently wash tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap
  4. Pat dry with clean paper towel (no cloth towels)
  5. Apply a thin layer of recommended aftercare ointment

First 2 Weeks (Healing Phase):

  • Wash tattoo 2-3 times daily with antibacterial soap
  • Apply aftercare ointment or fragrance-free lotion 2-3 times daily
  • Do NOT pick, scratch, or peel the tattoo
  • Avoid submerging in water (no swimming, baths, hot tubs)
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Wear loose, clean clothing over the tattoo

Long-Term Care:

  • Apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) when exposed to sun
  • Moisturize regularly to keep skin healthy
  • Avoid excessive stretching of the skin during healing

Your artist will recommend specific aftercare products. We sell aftercare kits at the studio.

Tattoo healing occurs in stages:

  • Days 1-3: Oozing, redness, swelling. Tattoo looks bright and fresh.
  • Days 4-7: Scabbing begins. Tattoo may feel tight and itchy.
  • Weeks 2-3: Peeling and flaking. Color may appear dull.
  • Weeks 4-6: Surface healing complete. Underneath layers continue healing.
  • Months 2-3: Fully healed. Color brightens as skin regenerates.

Factors Affecting Healing Time:

  • Size & Placement: Larger tattoos and certain areas (joints, hands, feet) take longer
  • Aftercare: Proper care speeds healing; improper care slows it
  • Individual Factors: Age, health, immune system, skin type
  • Color vs. Black: Color tattoos sometimes take slightly longer to heal

While the surface heals in 2-3 weeks, the skin continues to regenerate underneath for 2-3 months. Your tattoo will look its best after 3-4 months.

It's important to distinguish between normal healing and potential infection:

Normal Healing Signs:

  • Redness around the tattoo (first few days)
  • Mild swelling
  • Clear or slightly colored fluid (lymph) oozing
  • Itching as it heals
  • Peeling/flaking skin (like a sunburn)
  • Tightness or warmth in the area

Signs of Possible Infection:

  • Increasing redness spreading beyond tattoo area
  • Thick, colored discharge (yellow, green, pus)
  • Foul odor from the tattoo
  • Fever or chills
  • Red streaks radiating from tattoo
  • Severe pain days after getting tattooed
  • Excessive swelling that doesn't improve

What to do if you suspect infection:

  1. Contact us immediately
  2. We may recommend seeing a doctor
  3. Do NOT apply antibiotic cream without medical advice
  4. Keep the area clean and dry

Infections are rare with proper aftercare, but it's important to monitor your healing tattoo.

Activities should be limited during the initial healing phase (2-3 weeks):

  • Exercise:
    • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
    • Light exercise after 2-3 days (avoid sweating on tattoo)
    • Full workouts after 1-2 weeks (clean tattoo immediately after)
    • Avoid gym equipment touching the tattoo
  • Swimming/Submersion:
    • No swimming, baths, or hot tubs for 3 weeks
    • Showers are fine (avoid direct stream on tattoo)
    • Pools contain chlorine; oceans contain bacteria
    • Submersion can cause infection and ink loss
  • Sun Exposure:
    • No direct sunlight on fresh tattoo for 3-4 weeks
    • Once healed, always use SPF 30+ sunscreen
    • Sun exposure is the #1 cause of tattoo fading
    • Consider sun-protective clothing for extended exposure

When in doubt, wait longer. It's better to be cautious than risk damaging your new tattoo.

Health & Safety

We follow strict sterilization protocols to ensure client safety:

  • Single-Use Items: Needles, tubes, grips, ink caps, razors, and barriers are single-use and disposed of after each client
  • Autoclave Sterilization: Reusable equipment (tattoo machines, clip cords) is sterilized in a medical-grade autoclave
  • Surface Disinfection: All surfaces are cleaned with hospital-grade disinfectant between clients
  • Artist Protection: Artists wear gloves, change them frequently, and follow proper hand hygiene
  • Ink Safety: We use only high-quality, sterile tattoo inks from reputable suppliers
  • Health Department Compliance: We follow all New York State health department regulations

You can request to see our autoclave spore test results (required monthly) and health department inspection certificate at any time.

Safety Tip: Never get tattooed in an unlicensed studio or by an artist who doesn't follow proper sterilization procedures.

Yes, certain medical conditions may prevent or delay tattooing:

  • Absolute Contraindications:
    • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
    • Active infection or illness
    • Uncontrolled diabetes
    • Blood disorders (hemophilia, etc.)
    • Severe immune system disorders
    • Recent chemotherapy or radiation
  • Relative Contraindications (require doctor's note):
    • Controlled diabetes

    • High blood pressure
    • Skin conditions in tattoo area (eczema, psoriasis)
    • History of keloid scarring
    • Blood thinners (warfarin, etc.)
    • Autoimmune disorders

You must inform your artist about:

  • All medical conditions
  • Medications (especially blood thinners)
  • Allergies (especially to inks, latex, or adhesives)
  • Recent illnesses or infections

We may require a doctor's note for certain conditions. Your safety is our top priority.

No, we do not tattoo pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.

This is our studio policy for several important reasons:

  • Health Risks: The stress of tattooing could potentially affect pregnancy
  • Ink Absorption: While minimal, there's a theoretical risk of ink components entering bloodstream
  • Immune System: Pregnancy alters immune response, affecting healing
  • Pain Response: Pain tolerance changes during pregnancy
  • Liability: No studies conclusively prove tattooing is safe during pregnancy

Our Policy:

  • No tattoos during pregnancy
  • No tattoos while breastfeeding
  • Wait until 3 months after stopping breastfeeding
  • We require confirmation you're not pregnant before tattooing

We're happy to book your tattoo for after your pregnancy and breastfeeding journey. Congratulations on your growing family!

Yes, we offer vegan-friendly tattoo options:

  • Vegan Inks: We carry several brands of vegan tattoo inks that contain no animal products
  • Aftercare Products: Vegan aftercare options are available
  • Stencil Products: Our stencil paper and solution are vegan
  • Other Supplies: Most of our disposable supplies are vegan

What makes tattoo products non-vegan:

  • Inks containing bone char, shellac from insects, or glycerin from animal fat
  • Stencil products containing lanolin (from sheep's wool)
  • Aftercare products with beeswax, lanolin, or other animal derivatives

To request vegan products:

  1. Inform us during booking or consultation
  2. Remind your artist at your appointment
  3. We'll use vegan alternatives for all steps of the process

There may be a small additional fee for vegan inks as they're more expensive. Let us know your preferences!

Studio Policies

You must be 18 years or older to get tattooed at our studio.

This is non-negotiable and strictly enforced:

  • No exceptions for parental consent
  • Valid government-issued photo ID required (driver's license, passport, military ID)
  • We make a copy of your ID for our records as required by law
  • If you look young, we will ID you regardless of age

Acceptable Forms of ID:

  • Driver's license or state ID
  • Passport
  • Military ID

Not Acceptable:

  • School ID
  • Birth certificate
  • Photocopies or photos of ID
  • Expired ID

If you cannot provide valid ID, we cannot tattoo you, and your deposit will be forfeited.

Tip: Bring your ID even if you're obviously over 18. It's required by New York State law for tattoo studios.

No, we do not tattoo intoxicated individuals.

This policy is strictly enforced for several reasons:

  • Health Risks: Alcohol thins blood, causing excessive bleeding and poor ink retention
  • Safety: Intoxicated clients may not sit still or follow instructions
  • Consent: You cannot give informed consent while intoxicated
  • Quality: The tattoo will not heal or look as good
  • Studio Environment: Disruptive to artists and other clients

Our Policy:

  • No alcohol or recreational drugs 24 hours before your appointment
  • We reserve the right to refuse service if you appear intoxicated
  • If refused for intoxication, your deposit is forfeited
  • You will need to pay a new deposit to reschedule

If you're nervous about pain, we recommend other pain management strategies like deep breathing, distraction techniques, or discussing numbing options with your artist.

We love to document our work, but respect client privacy:

  • Artist Portfolio: Artists may ask to photograph your tattoo for their portfolio
  • Consent Required: We always ask permission before taking photos
  • Usage: Photos may be used on our website, social media, or promotional materials
  • Anonymity: We typically photograph just the tattoo, not your face or identifying features
  • Client Photos: You're welcome to take photos of your own tattoo

Photo Release Options:

  • Full Release: Allow photos for all purposes (portfolio, social media, website)
  • Limited Release: Photos for artist portfolio only (not public)
  • No Release: No photos taken (please let us know beforehand)

You can change your photo release preferences at any time by contacting us. If you previously agreed but want a photo removed, we'll honor your request.

Yes, we offer several pain management options:

  • Topical Numbing Cream: Applied before tattooing (client-provided or available for purchase)
  • Numbing Spray: Used during tattooing to manage discomfort
  • Distraction Techniques: Music, conversation, breathing exercises
  • Breaks: Regular breaks during longer sessions

Important Considerations:

  • Effectiveness Varies: Numbing products work differently for everyone
  • Skin Reaction: Some people have allergic reactions to numbing agents
  • Tattoo Quality: Some artists prefer not to use numbing cream as it can affect skin texture
  • Timing: Numbing cream must be applied correctly and given time to work

Our Recommendation:

  • Discuss pain management with your artist during consultation
  • If using numbing cream, bring it to your appointment or purchase from us
  • Test a small area first if you have sensitive skin
  • Remember that tattoos involve some discomfort - it's part of the process

We sell medical-grade numbing cream at the studio for $20/tube.
